Now that Easter Sundays have been consolidated into just sacrament, I feel the weight of ensuring that Palm Sunday has a wonderful focus to it on preparing for Holy Week.
Here are some ideas to use for Palm Sunday with your primary kids.
Silent Video and Scarves – with ANY song focused on Jesus
There’s an excellent Bible Video on the triumphal entry that’s just 1 minute long. Silence the video and sing a triumphant song while waving scarves!
We sang “I Believe in Christ.” Click the link for more ideas to use with that song.
DISCLAIMER: Please ask a member of the presidency to help you run the TV while you are in charge of the activity. Don’t be a martyr and try to do everything yourself. 🙂
First time through: Sing the song with the video playing silently, and demonstrate waving your scarf as if it’s a palm leaf.
Ask the children what they notice about the video. Receive their answers. Pass out the scarves.
Second time through: Everyone waves the scarves as you watch and sing the song.
Show the children how they can place their scarves on the ground like a “red carpet” for Jesus to walk on.
Third time through: Sing the song, even more joyfully, while children place their scarves on the floor.
Bear testimony about the joyous welcoming we want to give Jesus into our hearts and homes this week in preparation for Easter.
Variation: Picture and Scarves
Don’t have easy access to a TV? No problem. Using the picture of Christ’s Triumphal Entry from the Gospel Art Kit, place the picture on the board. You could also draw it or enlarge it. Do the activity just like above, and relax knowing you don’t have to worry about technology while you sing.
Variation: Hoberman Sphere
If the song you are singing is very familiar, this is a great time to pull out a hoberman sphere and help the children test out their ability to SING loud and soft! Especially if the song you’re reviewing is in preparation for Easter Sunday.
You can add the sphere as another repetition of the song, or use it from the second or third time while the children wave their scarves.
