This shadow box activity will work well for songs that need visual intrigue and are meant to be reverent.
My shadow box design is collapsable to save space!

This turned out so good! I used a Costco diaper box.

First we cut the square on one of the larger faces of the box, then smaller rectangular squares on the sides of the box.
Then, we put duct-tape on the raw edges of the box so nobody would hurt themselves on it!
We laid it completely flat on a painting canvas, and spray painted it black.

Once it dried I put butcher paper on the inside of the front.

I am using Velcro to keep the top and bottoms closed. When I’m done I can collapse it flat until I’m ready to use it again!
You can put a phone inside with the flashlight on if you don’t have a headlamp.
How to do Shadow Puppets for Maximum Engagement
It would be easy to hand off the shadow puppets to 2 kids in your primary to do for everyone, but then you have a bunch of kids sad they didn’t get a turn. Here’s how I do shadow puppet singing time:
- When you introduce a new song: (1) Sing it once through with the puppets. (2) ask the kids to look for certain symbols that you use for a specific word or phrase on the next sing-through.
- Do it to enhance a song-story with the kids. Visit the link to learn how to do song stories from the master, Sharla Dance. Song stories never fail me, kids are intrigued all the time!
Songs with Shadow Puppets for you
