“The First Noel” Singing Time Ideas

The melody of this song is so nice! Consider singing it in singing time with your kids, especially some of the later verses!

“The First Noel” Handbell Charts

Such a beautiful melody would sound even better with singing along with harmony bells or letting the children focus on the melody with a melodic chart.

“The First Noel” Musical Guest Video

I might be a little biased, but the Tabernacle Choir’s arrangement of The First Noel is one of my very favorite arrangements of this song, especially the final verse. You could use this as a “testimony” activity to just let the kids watch and focus on how they feel. Or you could show pictures to correlate with the imagery in the various verses.

You may not have a dry eye in the primary room after this activity. I would sandwich this after some physical activities to ensure the kids have gotten their wiggles out before you do it.

Here is a lyric video you could also use, but the words are in a script that won’t be easy for the kids to read and the imagery is a little distracting, in my opinion but it’s there for you!

“The First Noel” Scarf Actions

This activity doesn’t need to be complicated. Here are some actions you can do with scarves while singing the first verse of The First Noel.

  • Bring the scarf from the ground up to the top of your head (following the rising melodic line)
  • Wave the scarf up high above your head for “angel”
  • Put the scarf over/around your head for “shepherd”
  • “Where they lay” – pretend to lay down with your scarf as a pillow
  • Fields: brush the ground with the scarf
  • Cold: rub your arms with the scarf
  • Follow the melodic line with your scarf while singing “Noel”
  • “Born is the king of Israel” Cradle a baby in your arms
