I love singing this song for fun the weekend of Thanksgiving or throughout November. It’s an underrated song!
“Count Your Blessings” with Yoga Cards
You can post several cards on the board and point to the poses the kids should make, ever few measures or so. Then kids can come forward and mix them up, or swap some out from your stack.
I was skeptical of using yoga cards, but the kids love it. This gives you a chance to say things like “I am grateful for my body!” while doing different poses when singing this song. You can also ask the kids for what they are grateful for.
“What has the Lord done for you?” is another question you might ask.
I made my own hand made cards, but Camille has some on her website.
“Count Your Blessings” Directed Listening
Here are some questions you can ask the kids while sinigng so they pay attention to the words (some questions are probably only appropriate for Senior primary, as they have more advanced vocabulary):
- How many times do we sing “blessing” in the song?
- What do you think “tempest-tossed” means?
- What is a “billow”?
- What does the song say will surprise you?
- How many times does the song say “name them one by one”?
I often combine directed listening questions with hand actions or some other activity. Use your best judgment!
“Count Your Blessings” Hand Bell Charts
I think breaking out the hand bells for holidays is really fun, and this particular song is one that is so fun to do because it combines some melody and harmony! Just don’t sing it with the piano accompaniment because the pianist will be in the Key of D, these charts are in the Key of C!
