This song has my heart! I love it so much for its clarity, simplicity, and beautiful melody. You could sing this during a New Testament, Book of Mormon, or Doctrine and Covenants year because each verse focuses on a specific moment from those time periods/places where the Father introduces His Son.

“This is My Beloved Son” Guest Artist Video
This is a gem of an arrangement. I would use this if you want the children to really feel the spiritual depth behind the song, and hear the song in its entirety. You could even just use the audio of the song, and during each verse rotate a different picture for the kids to look at:
- Christ being baptized by John the Baptist
- Christ descending to visit the Nephites
- The First Vision
- A Child reading Scriptures
“This is My Beloved Son” Melody Map
This melody map has all four verses. Feel free to use only the verses that you are focusing on with the kids.
For Senior Primary I love to mix up the pages so they have to put the melody in order. You can tap one child on the shoulder while singing the verse to have them help move the papers in order. I would only do 1 verse at a time with them, though, or it will get complicated pretty quickly. Then they might notice what the dot colors stand for!
Enhancement for Senior: You could separate all 4 verses between your four classes, and have each class put the melody map in order for their verse, which makes it like an envelope game challenge. It would be a great review activity!
For Junior Primary I like to leave the melody map in order on the board and have them focus on what the colored dots mean– I usually point to the different dots as we sing to make it clearer for them.
“This is My Beloved Son” No-Prep Actions Activity
Ask the children to help you come up with actions for the song as you sing the verse! The child who comes up with the action can come to the front and be in charge of remembering that action. By the end of the song you’ll have 5-6 kids, and can repeat the song several times.
If you prefer to be prepared with actions, here are some ideas for verse 1:
- Jesus Entered – kids jump, as if jumping into the water
- Jordan’s Waters – kids make wave motions with hand
- When His Work had Just Begun – one fist pound on center of other hand as if hammering at work
- God the Father Spoke from Heaven – hands open and close like someone is speaking
- This is My Beloved Son – Gesture to side, like pointing out Jesus
- Hear Him – one hand on your heart, other hand cupped behind your ear
“This is My Beloved Son” Rhythm Out of Order Activity
This activity is great for helping the hchildren identify patterns in rhythm in a song. Because this song has predictable rhythms and simple patterns, it makes for a great scramble. You can scramble these up and have the kids put the rhythms in order. The words to the first verse are on here, but these could be used for any/all of the verses!
