“Follow the Prophet” Singing Time Ideas

Follow the Prophet is so melodically different from other primary songs, it’s great to bring it back year over year! I especially like using lesser-used verses for the Old Testament (Jonah’s verse and Daniel’s verses I like a lot).

Lately someone posted an alternative verse for the Book of Mormon that I’m planning to use.

Nephi was a prophet, he chose to obey

All of the commandments that the Lord did say.

Nephi was courageous, valiant and true.

What the Lord commanded, he would go and do.

“Follow the Prophet” Color the Banners with Butcher Paper

This activity gets the song a TON of repetitions while children color or draw the subject that you’re singing about! During the Old Testament year we sang the Jonah verse and the Daniel verse over and over again (alternating) and the kids got to draw their interpretations.

Our Senior Primary begins with 1 blank butcher paper section for each class. In empty spots in the primary room, I place the butcher paper on the floor. They draw freehand whatever they feel relates to the song, and I instruct them not to fill it in! I roam around the room singing with them.

When time is up (5 minutes) Senior Primary classes show everyone their artwork, and we tell them we will use these for the Junior kids to color in.

Junior Primary gets to color in what the Senior Primary made in the previous 20 minute singing time, and show everyone how they filled it in.

We just sing the song over and over again. Nothing fancy. But the kids really like it and we get some cute pictures with kids and their large drawings.

“Follow the Prophet” Foam Block Partners

If you think your Junior primary kids would struggle with partners, you can modify this for them. If you don’t have foam blocks, have the kids use their hands.

I use variations of this rhythm pattern all the time on various 4-beat songs.

My foam blocks are pool noodles from the dollar store. They’re my favorite manipulative because they are soft, can be used for rhythm, and nobody can hurt anyone with them (that I know).

“Follow the Prophet” Rhythm Stick Circle

This is a genius activity from Sharla Dance. I don’t have Maori Sticks, I just use the rhythm sticks that we have in our closet.

One thing I love about circling up is it really gets the kids’ attention and shifts the energy of the room rather than having them in the same seats the whole time.

I do this activity for Junior and Senior Primary, I just leave out the “toss” for Junior.

“Follow the Prophet” Bell Chart

I usually don’t make bell charts for songs that are this chromatic because you need a complete bell set to make it work (whether using melody or simple harmonies). But I made one anyway, enjoy!

It has a melody version (if you’ve got extended/chromatic bells) and a harmony version (if you’ve got 8-note bells).
