This is a newer song from Angie Killian and I love it because of how plainly it teaches about God’s guidance! I needed a song like this in my primary lineup this year. (Get the sheet music at the link above)
The Liahona Silent Video
There’s already a fantastic lyric video put together on YouTube, so just silence it and sing the song for the kids! Just make sure you pause it before it moves on beyond where you’ve practiced.
“The Liahona” Actions (First Verse)
If you’re familiar with Sharla Dance’s methods, you know that she recommends breaking up longer songs and only teaching single verses at a time. So here are my actions for The Liahona, first verse.
I kid you not, my daughter remembered all these actions and the words to the song without me having to show her, and it had been 2 weeks since she had learned them. This is a good song! And the kids love these actions.
“The Liahona” Chorus Actions
“The Liahona” Actions (Verse 2)
- Make a circle with fingers above your head
- Listening with hand behind ear
- Make prayer hands
- Hammer fists
- Point both fingers forward on the beat
- Heart hands
- Both hands over heart
- Shine/fan hands out
- Make a path with parallel hands
- Point fingers upward
“The Liahona” Actions (Bridge)
- Both hands “speaking”
- Gesture one hand on the right, one on the left
- Make a book with hands
- Raise hand as if in class and want teacher to call on you
- Both hands on head, like someone receiving a blessing
- Cup hand behind ear and nod head
“The Liahona” Directed Listening Questions
Some folks like doing directed listening in conjunction with other activities (I like doing it with hand gestures), but you can also do them without.
Sing the part of the song one time through before asking some questions.
- Which words are held out the longest?
- Which words rhyme?
- If the family was faithful what happened?
- What did the family cross?
- What did the Liahona do?
I recommend doing this for the first time you introduce a song, as it gets the kids thinking deeper about the song’s meaning, but can be used anytime.
“Liahona” Fill in the Blank
For Senior Primary you can also do this activity as a “fill in the blank” concept (I’ve actually had good luck with junior primary too when I tell them what the words say, they like watching me write the answers down on the chalkboard).
- The Liahona led ____________
- Through ____________
- To find ____________
- If they were faithful, the Lord __________
- And through their diligence would _____________
“The Liahona” Symbols Out of Order
This activity is great at engaging senior and junior primary! Feel free to print. You simply place the images on the board and let the children put them in the right order as you sing the song over and over again.
DISCLAIMER: ONLY DO “OUT OF ORDER” ONE VERSE AT A TIME! I would not recommend combining verses or the chorus for this activity.
One thing I love about creating icons, is I usually can re-use some for different songs as I keep them pretty generic. So don’t toss these when you’re through! You can re-use these for another activity down the road, I’m sure of it. Laminate them if you like.
Other “Liahona” Song Activities
These activities come straight from Angie’s own website, which is so helpful!
- Pictures In Order (For the Bridge)
- Eraser Pass (for older kids)
- Spot It Game
