“Books in the Book of Mormon” Singing Time Ideas

I never learned this song when I was in primary, but now I wish I had! A fast-paced overview of the books can be fun for everyone.

Actions for Books in the Book of Mormon

Once you learn these actions, this makes a great review song or even “wiggle” style song, but it also serves to help the children connect the books with specific concepts, which I LOVE! The only action that isn’t too self-explanatory is Jacob = Tree in ASL.

I’m planning to bring this back several times with actions once the children have gotten into the Book of Mormon further.

1 & 2: Fingers

Nephi: Bow

Jacob: ASL tree

Enos: praying

Jarom/Omni: Handing book from Father to Son

Words of Mormon (two W’s with fingers, two M’s with fingers)

Mosiah: Crown

Alma: Missionary Badge

Helaman: Judge gavel

3/4 Nephi: Arms coming down from above (Jesus)

Mormon: writing on hand

Ether: Waves of the sea

Moroni: Blowing a trumpet

Learn: Point to head

Book of Mormon: Make book with hands

Books in the Book of Mormon Eraser Pass (for Senior Primary)

This activity is fun, but quite hard. My senior primary struggled! Make several groupings of names in the Book of Mormon (I’d do 3 names per group) Get kids to erase the words that don’t belong in the song.

I used names of other prophets and people like Lehi, Abinadi, Ammon, Aaron, etc. surrounding the names of the actual books in the Book of Mormon.

Books in the Book of Mormon Yoga Poses

Again, this song is great for wiggles! Just grab out some yoga cards with poses and your junior primary is going to have so much fun making different poses with their bodies as you sing. It can be a little bit of a work out, but beats other wiggle songs because you’re still teaching about the Book of Mormon with it.

Books in the Book of Mormon put in Order

This activity came from Janel Case over at Primary Singing and was a challenge for my Senior primary! You just have word strips of each of the names of the books, and kids have to put them in order. Sounds simple.

This could be adapted for Senior Primary to be an envelope game activity in small groups of 3-4 kids, each group putting them in order on the floor.

Foam Block Pattern for “Books in the Book of Mormon”

This song is very strong in rhythm and works well with clapping, tapping, etc, but here’s a foam block pattern for this song:

4 times through: patsch-patsch, scrape-scrape, shoulder-clap, shoulder-clap
