“Far Far Away on Judea’s Plains” Singing Time Ideas

This is such a good song for singing time in December, I was surprised not to find anyone had made plans for how to teach it. First off, Far Far Away on Judea’s Plains is upbeat, which is great contrast for more lullaby-ish Christmas songs. Second, it contains actual words from the scriptures. “Glory to God in the Highest. Peace on Earth, Good will to men!”

Here are my ideas for how to do this song with your primary!

I outline the entire way to do this activity and demonstrate with rhythm sticks. Click the link above! So fun and engaging!

“Far Far Away on Judea’s Plains” Finger Lights

This is a great activity the builds on itself over and over, and teaches the kids how to conduct! If you’re introducing finger lights for the first time, I would write the 4/4 conducting pattern on the chalkboard (you can find it at the back of the hymnbook), (1) have the kids do it with just their fingers first, following your hand, (2) then pass out the finger lights, and have everyone do it together. (3) Then turn the lights off and do it. (4) Have SR primary tap a subdivision of the 8th notes on their chest, and conduct with their other hand at the same time! This is so good for the brain and for discovering the beat. (5) An additional challenge for Sr primary would be to ask them to think of the words that fall on the downbeat, see if they can name them.

This lesson plan gives you 3-5 passes through the song without it becoming boring for the kids to sing (or listen) along!

“Far Far Away on Judea’s Plains” Handbell Charts

There are 4 different ways to do this song included in this handbell chart set! The melody and harmony in the keys of C (for only 8-note key of C bell sets) and F (for extended/chromatic sets).

I’d recommend if you’re introducing the song, using the melody charts. If it’s review, or a familiar song, the harmonies will present a challenge (similar to a melody map if you have the children examine it before playing).
