“Could I Hold the Baby?” Singing Time Ideas

This Christmas song (YouTube link) was just introduced to me and I absolutely love it! It has been posted on the Church’s website, and the PDF sheet music is free to download and use. Here are the ways that we have taught this song in primary.

“Could I Hold the Baby?” Song Actions

Watch for my actions to the first verse and chorus of “Could I Hold the Baby?” (Forgive me going down an octave!)

This is a natural first Sunday activity to learning the song. Good choreography will stick in their minds and help their hands be engaged! I always like to ask them why they think we made certain actions with our hands, or if they have questions about them. The kids’ answers always are insightful!

“Could I Hold the Baby?” Silent Video

Use the video linked above and sing the song while it plays on mute (starting at 10:15). The children will be riveted on the TV while hearing you sing, bonus points if you sing even without the piano. A great way to introduce the song, or to use on a second Sunday. It will lend a very sacred feeling to your singing time.

“Could I Hold the Baby?” Song Erase

Use this song erase activity! I’ve already created the presentations you need to make the song progressively harder. Just share the screens to the TV in your primary room! This is good for senior primary.

Could I Hold the Baby Sway and Freeze

For Junior Primary, you could easily do sway-and-freeze with this song. Ask the children to follow your body and arms swaying from side to side in time to the music (BIG SWAYING MOTIONS), periodically freeze and ask the kids if their arms are the same direction as yours.

Could I Hold the Baby Melody Map (verse 2)

Our kids learned Could I Hold the Baby verse 1 during November, and during December we are learning the 2nd verse! These melody maps are printable on home printer paper. You can mix up the map for senior primary, or keep it in order for junior primary. It will be challenging for both groups!
